Sir Martin Lang was a scholar and nobleman who produced works of biography in the middle decades of the 18th century. His most popular work is a book entitled “The Intangible Mask”: the story of a man known only as The Baron, a 16th century nobleman famous for the extravagant parties he held. The Intangible Mask kept his identity secret through subterfuge and ruse. He was always present at his parties, but as who, or what? The secret of disguise is to be invisible in plain sight, a sleight of hand of which The Baron was a known master. The grandiose society parties were a story unto themselves. The Baron is believed to have transformed the crumbling turrets and darkened halls of European castles into Polynesian Islands or Mayan Temples or subterranean caves complete with fireflies and bats. Once there was a waterfall, a river cascading down a central staircase. Guests were served dark mead out of hollowed out chunks of living rock.

Word spread of an offer from The Baron. Discover his identity, lay claim to his fortune and become The Intangible Mask. A sect of sleuths was formed, the “Le Dévoilé”: “The Unveiled”. They believed they could unmask the unmaskable. They would present themselves at every gathering, trailing servants, questioning guests, silently observing the ‘host’ as he swept around the room, offering gaieties and kissing women. The Baron himself threw “Le Dévoilé” their very own party where the grand hall of a castle in Prussia was hung with curtains and veils, yet The Baron’s true identity remained secret and “Le Dévoilé” continued unsuccessful.

Sir Martin wrote his book after attending a party thrown by The Baron himself, and, when he realized that it was impossible for a 16th Century noble ringmaster to throw a party hundreds of years after his death, he too joined the “Le Dévoilé”, now a secret society in it’s own right, and devoted his life to the hunt to unveil the intangible mask.

“And it is through the frivolous that we hunt the legend, and it is from the gaiety that our own masks are created. He remains unfound and his” gatherings”, these events of grace and grandiosity, live on”.
